5 Differences Between Residential and Commercial Painting

At Two Dudes Painting Company, we often get asked about the differences between our residential and commercial painting services. While both types of projects share some similarities, there are also some significant differences that home and business owners should be aware of before they commit to a paint job.

In this blog article, we’ll go through five of the most important distinctions between residential and business painting projects.

1. Scope of work: Commercial painting projects typically require a much larger scope of work than residential painting projects. This is because commercial buildings are often much larger than homes and have more surfaces that need to be painted (e.g., walls, ceilings, trim). As a result, commercial painting projects usually take longer to complete than their residential counterparts.

2. Duration of project: In addition to taking longer to complete, commercial painting projects also tend to last longer than residential ones. This is because businesses operate on different schedules than homes—most companies are open during typical weekday hours (9 am-5 pm), while most homes are not. Commercial painters typically have to work around the schedules of businesses to minimize disruptions during regular operating hours.

3. Use of space: The way commercial and residential spaces are used also affects how they are painted. For example, businesses typically want their lobbies and reception areas to look welcoming and inviting, so they tend to use lighter colors that make these spaces appear bigger and brighter. On the other hand, darker colors are often used in industrial settings because they help mask any dirt or grime that may build up over time.

4. Budget: the budget for a commercial painting project is often much higher than the budget for a similar residential project. This is primarily due to the increased scope of work associated with commercial projects (as mentioned above). It is not uncommon for commercial painting projects to cost several times more than their residential counterparts—sometimes even tens of thousands of dollars more!

5. Future needs: When choosing paint colors for a commercial space, it is also essential to consider any future needs that may arise—such as the need to repaint after tenants move out or the need to add new colors when redecorating common areas. With this in mind, many businesses choose neutral colors (such as whites or light grays) that can be easily repainted without having to buy all new paint supplies or hire a new painter… like us! 🙂

As you can see, there are several key differences between residential and commercial painting projects—from the scope of work involved to the budget required to complete the job.
